When his unsecured thermos flask leaked, an eight-year-old Japanese boy was left with the traumatic experience of discovering his Nintendo 3DS XL submerged in water.

Distraught, he contacted Nintendo’s customer service centre to request that it was repaired and, in his guilt, wrote a heartfelt apology for his mistake.

Japanese Twitter user Illil retold the tale, sharing the hastily penned letter (translated by Kotaku): “I apologise for accidentally getting [my 3DS] wet. I’d like to think I’ve already resigned myself to not seeing my 3DS, which is always with me. From here on out, I aim to close my thermos’ lid correctly. I am truly sorry.”

I faced a similarly worrying situation when a water bottle leaked on my Limited Edition Pikachu 3DS XL, but Nintendo were able to quickly repair the handheld’s innards. Let’s hope that they can do the same this time around!
