How To Get The Hylian Shield In The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The Hylian Shield was first seen in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and his since become a recurring staple in the series. As with the Master Sword of Resurrection, it is an entirely optional item in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And, similarly, you can head straight to its location as soon as you leave the Great Plateau.

However, that location is the most dangerous in the game early on. Hyrule Castle. Those that want to take on the challenge at whatever stage they have reached in Link’s open-air adventure, should firstly head to the northern side to Hyrule Castle.

Once here, look across the moat and you should keep an eye out for an entrance that looks like a mineshaft – a damaged Guardian nearby is a more useful landmark to spot. This is where you are headed, and, once you have reached the entrance you will need to use Cryonis to lift a gate to enter the Lockup.

This basement area is Hyrule Castle’s dungeon, and players must take care as Lizalfos and Moblins wander the corridors and inhabit the cells. These can be opened with switches that line the corridor, so be careful not to overwhelm yourself with an overly enthusiastic weapon swipe – even if some cells contain high-end weapons and bows.

The room you are wanting to head to is at the end of the corridor. This was once where the “Test of the Royal Guard” took place, with those that successfully toppled a Hinox becoming recognised as a knight of the kingdom. The problem is, the Hinox has long since perished.

It is now a Stalnox, which, while far more terrifying, plays out nearly exactly the same as a Hinox encounter. Aim for the Stalnox’s eye with an arrow, and you will open a short window to deal as much damage as possible with your main weapon.

The battle isn’t an entirely tricky one, but, once you have depleted the Stalnox’s health, its eye will fall out which you will need to destroy before it can recover.

Your reward? The Hylian Shield, which has the highest durability and parry ability in the entire game. This is the only way that you can obtain it, and, once broken, you will need to visit Tarrey Town to purchase a replacement.
