Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the last first-party game that will release on Wii U.

With Nintendo Switch little more than a month until launch, it isn’t exactly a surprise that Nintendo will have shifted their development teams to work on the new home gaming system in the hope that it will prove to be a far greater success.

“From a first-party standpoint, there’s no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” Fils-Aimé confirmed to Polygon. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

He added that Wii U games will continue to be sold at retail and on the Nintendo eShop, and assured those that are still playing titles such as Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 online that there are no plans to deactivate Nintendo Network on the console.

“From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future,” Fils-Aimé clarified. “The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We’re going to continue to support that.”

He admits that Nintendo had learned much from their successes and stumbles with Wii U, and was, therefore, making sure that Nintendo Switch wouldn’t be met with the same mistakes.

“Even today when I ask people, ‘so what was Wii U all about?’ I get a wide variety of responses,” he admitted. “In managing the business, that’s just not good.”

Nintendo Switch will launch worldwide on Friday 3rd March, priced at £279.99 ($299.99).
