With Super Mario Run leaping on iPhone and iPad this week, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has played down concerns about the portly Italian plumber arriving late to the party on Android devices.

“In order to develop the game and make it as special, we had to focus on one platform and we decided to focus on iOS, iPhone, [and] iPad,” Fils-Aimé explained to Bloomberg. “And so, in the future, it is coming to Android, we’ve made that commitment and something that will happen in 2017.”

He was then asked whether Nintendo was worried that the early exclusivity on iPhone and iPad would alienate Android users, to which he explained that they are working hard to release the auto-runner platformer on Google Play “as quickly as possible.”

Fils-Aimé responded: “We don’t think so because our focus is going to be to bring it on to all of those devices as quickly as possible. For us, it’s all about making sure that the experience is great, it’s making sure that from a consumer standpoint that they’ve got access to this game. We see the market as all two billion plus smart devices out there. So, certainly, it will be coming to the Android platform as soon as we can.”

Super Mario Run will release on the App Store for iPhone and iPad on Thursday 15th December.
