Professor Layton’s adventures may have come to a close in Azran Legacy, but we still miss its mind-boggling puzzles – even if Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney gave us one last hurrah.

We’re sad to share that Japan Times have reported that Japanese psychologist Akira Tago has passed away after suffering from interstitial pneumonia, aged 90 years old.

Known in Japan for his best-selling puzzle book series Atama no Taisou, we have much more to be thankful for given that he had penned the puzzles for the entire Professor Layton series.

More so, LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino largely attributes his childhood love for the Atama no Taisou puzzle books as the direct inspiration behind his desire to create Professor Layton in the first place.

With 23 volumes, his puzzle books have sold more than 12 million copies in Japan alone, which is a clear indication of their popularity.

Rest in peace, Tago-san.
