Miitomo Tops iOS Social Network App Chart In Japan

Miitomo may have only seen release in Japan on Thursday, but it is already proving to be a runaway success for Nintendo.

Bloomberg reports that the free-to-start communication appl has dethroned Line, the country’s most popular instant messenger app, on the iOS App Store, where market research firm App Annie say it is now ranked at No. 1 in social-networking apps.

“This should remove any doubts about the Nintendo brand’s relevancy in the smartphone age,” comments Jefferies Group analyst Atul Goyal. “More than just a messaging tool, Miitomo can be a platform for distributing Nintendo content, and probably third-party content at a later stage.”

Miitomo is a social experience in which users can create Mii characters to interact with their friends, answering questions to discover information they wouldn’t normally learn and spark conversation around it.

Nintendo has been pleased with the “very positive feedback” that they have received so far, but declined to share how many times the app has been downloaded.

“We had a good start and have received very positive feedback,” added Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa. “Miitomo will continue to evolve.”
