Unity and Unreal Engine 4 support could be on the cards for Nintendo NX from launch, if the latest rumours are to prove to be true.

After the rumour he shared last week, MetalDave has gleaned more information from an anonymous developer currently working on an Unreal Engine 4 project.

Those conversations now suggest that the developer’s account manager at Nintendo has confirmed “that Unity and Unreal Engine 4 will both be ready in time for when developers outside of key partners are able to purchase dev kits of their own.”

As the developer’s game is already running on Unreal Engine 4, they were pleased by such news in that it shows Nintendo are taking the initiative to encourage the industry to approach their undisclosed “dedicated game platform.”

For the uninitiated, Unreal Engine 4 is a comprehensive suite of game development tools, used by indies and third-party publishers alike. In outlining the suite’s benefits, creator Epic Games write that developers “can learn one engine and one workflow to meet all of your needs now and in the future. From mobile projects to super high-end console and PC games, Unreal Engine is in use by indies and professionals around the world.”

Bandai Namco Entertainment, Capcom and Square Enix each already have Unreal Engine 4 projects in the works or nearing completion, such as Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

There’s every indication that these rumblings will more than likely turn out to be true, with Nintendo wanting to avoid a repeat situation of when Epic Games vice president Mark Rein laughed when asked if Wii U would support Unreal Engine 4. It was a reaction that didn’t instil confidence in the console’s capability, which Nintendo NX won’t want to be hampered by.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has maintained a healthier relationship with Unity, which has notably seen support recently introduced for New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.

  1. Nintendo has to with the nx, matter of fact, it should support unreal engine 5 when it comes up, if Nintendo wants to be where the rivals at, they’ll need all the tech. to help them out, plus a unreal engine 4 Zelda ocarina of time remastered would look nice on the nx too.

    1. I don`t care what engine they support. Bring innovative games. Or no support from me. If Nintendo just brings another Controller from 1980s, i will be finally done with them. Oh and: I don`t plan to buy any new Mario Kart, Mario 2D or Smash Bros-game in the future…sooooo. It will be really hard for them without my money. Well, i guess everybody has to die some day. Its just a matter of time.

      1. Come down off your innovative high horses. If I see the word nintendo and innovative in the same sentence again im gonna scream , enough with this word , it brought us the wii and wii u , with no multi platform games , and long stretches of a console life cycle spent doing sweet f*** all. If you have got a steady stream of high profile game you gotta shot at adopters , if its this innovative baloney then devs wont bother porting their stuff , because it takes too much time

        The end
