Nintendo NX software development kits enter distribution

Nintendo has started distributing software development kits for NX, their “dedicated game platform.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that such move suggests that NX could launch as early as next year, with the kits to be used by third-party developers to create or modify existing games for release on the console.

With the Nintendo 3DS having been at retail for several years and Wii U having faltered, it is expected that Nintendo will look to replace them in the market with whatever NX is planned to be. Expectation is that it will include a console and mobile unit, that can be used together but also separately.

“We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of the 3DS and Wii U,” commented Macquarie Capital Securities analyst David Gibson.

Nintendo has reportedly said that they will aim to put industry-leading chips for NX, after Wii U faced criticism that it couldn’t compete with Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

We won’t hear about NX until 2016, but rumours have circulated that it will launch next summer. Nintendo had reportedly shown their plans to third-party publishers at E3 2015, but have been clear that they won’t abandon Wii U and Nintendo 3DS development whenever the platform launches.
