Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has already declared Nintendo as having “the best first-party on the planet,” but he reiterated such compliment at gamescom 2015.

As part of a wider interview, Spencer was asked as to whether exclusive games are still necessary to sell hardware. The reasoning behind the question was, given that it has the best exclusives, surely the Wii U should have sold better than it has achieved over the past three years.

His response began by deflecting criticism over Wii U sales, before saying that first-party publishers are still unable to compete with “the strength of IP that Nintendo has.”

“On the Wii U, I think people downplay how many units they’ve sold,” Spencer told Eurogamer. “I’ve got a Wii U, I think there’s some great games on there. I think Splatoon’s a really nice game and I don’t think there’s a first-party out there that has the strength of IP that Nintendo has. They’re always a beacon to me when I look at what it means to build a first-party portfolio of products, they’ve done a great job.”
