Project CARS on Wii U struggling to maintain consistent 720p, 30fps

We were suspicious when Project CARS on Wii U was repeatedly sidelined, and it would appear that fear was warranted.

In successive, honest posts on the Project CARS forum, studio head Ian Bell has revealed that Slightly Mad Studios are struggling to realise their vision for the motorsport racing simulator on Wii U.

With development ongoing, Bell even went as far to suggest that they may even await the Nintendo NX – reasoning that the hardware announcement will likely come “halfway through us finishing.” Although if no NX announcement comes at E3 2015 (as Satoru Iwata himself has stated), Bell shares that they “will have a go at it.”

However, it sounds less than ideal with Bell sharing that they will have to “really cut the looks back” to see it running better on Wii U.

“I can’t say too much but we’re awaiting E3 with baited breath. Don’t read wrongly into that… OK I’ll come clean. At the moment we’re running at about 23FPS on the WiiU. We’re awaiting/hoping for more of a hardware announcement at E3…

“Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we’re looking to Nintendo’s next console. 720p yes. I suppose if they don’t announce something at E3 or soon after we will have a go at it.

“We could reach a fairly solid 30FPS but it might take a hell of a lot of work. On the other hand, about halfway through us finishing, Nintendo might announce a new console (I have zero knowledge on this BTW but I’ve heard ‘rumours’). Our work might just be the best thing that ever hit that new console in the driving sim genre.

“So we’re playing a waiting game at the moment and yes, economics do come in to it.”

  1. So after all the bullshots and videos it can’t even run 30fps? Stuff this game then.
I can’t believe a studio head can’t do the slightest bit of research though, how absolutely useless is he?

    1. Said videos were all on the PS4, which I can say from personal experience runs it just fine.

  2. Im not gonna buy this game on pc. its wii u or nothing for me. I dont care about super sleak visuals…what i do care, as a racing enthusiast, is the phisycs of the game.

  3. Are you guys in the comments serious,
you care about the physics of the game, and you expect a tech heavy next gen game from your old wii.
not trying to be mean, but do you understand that the wii isnt as powerful as its counterparts, esp the current gen and pc??
Calling him and his team useless?
    Disgusting

  4. They should ask for Nintendo’s help. If Nintendo can do 720p-1080p, 30-60fps, (Smash, Mario Kart), then there is no reason why a third party can not.

    1. All those are simple 2d fighters or Mario Kart it has no AA, uses last gen lighting effects and simple colour gradients not high quality textures.
It’s the Wii U it’s weak. Just because some simple colour games run 60fps on it doesn’t mean real graphics games can do that on weak hardware.

  5. I just think it’s a shame since when ask people to support this at differnt levels for kick starter and once they received enough funding for Wii U they should follow thru with the development. This is why the system lost part of its momentum. Because companies like this figure its not a big deal anymore since other companies opted to pull the plug with Wii U support. Bottom line is be upfront if you don’t want to support in the beginning don’t hype it up that you will do it. It just seems like another blow that devalues a system that is good but is primary a Nintendo IP driven system.

    1. The system lost momentum because its specs suck. Its a tad better than ps3 /360 and doesn’t hold a candle to this generation. Just like the Wii before it. Nintendo needs to keep hardware comparable to other current gen consoles to be taken seriously by 3rd party devs.

  6. Yea multiple basic games with almost no texture or high detail run at 60 fps on wii u. Wii U is anemic it has a 3 core cpu, 2 GB of Ram (1 Gb for gaming only ) and a GPU that is only slightly stronger then PS3 and 360. Wii U is pretty much a last gen console with more RAM and a tablet.

  7. The Wii U version will be a sales flop anyway, so it’s going to be a lost cause. The game is going to be compared to other versions from the off, and it’s not going to be a console seller. A bad idea from the start.

  8. What’s the point in announcing it on the wii u in the first place then start talking about the next nintendo console. Heard it’s shit anyway,be buying an xbox one soon as well with forza ,a real racing game with better stearing controls.

  9. So you’re telling me, Mr. Bell, that you started the development of this game which was supposed to be a wiiu/pc exclusive in 2010 and you’re not even halfway done with the wii u version? WHAT iS WRONG WITH YOU? Not to mention the fact that there are more graphically intensive games, like fast racing neo, that run at 60fps with 4 and 80 textures that are being developed by a total of 6 people. Wow, this is just sad. Lazy devs are lazy.

  10. Cristo calling Forza a real drivingsimulator and better than Project Cars is dellusional.
Forza is more arcade and not a real drivingsimulator, and Project Cars is a Real racing simulator.

  11. @Jacketsnest101

hmm.. A Wii U exclusive in 2010.. I think you really should stop believing the hype and BS created by the Wii U community, they really are making themselves look bloody stupid with comments plucked out of thin air..
