Nintendo have today reported their financial results for the third quarter, tracking revenue that the Japanese giant generated between October – December 2014.

Nintendo secured itself operating profit at 31.4 billion yen (£175 million), spurred by a weakened yen that saw net profit at 45.215 billion yen (£252 million) and overall sales revenue at 271.521 billion yen (£1.5 billion).

Wii U hardware saw 1.91 million sales worldwide throughout the quarter, with Nintendo 3DS hitting 4.99 million sales – the installed base having now passed 50.41 million. While Wii U remains on track to reach Nintendo’s annual target of 3.6 million throughout the year, they shared that they had been disappointed that 3DS sales “did not grow sufficiently” in North America and Europe, attributing that to the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL’s late arrival in each region.

It was enough to cause uncertainty, with the company reducing their profit forecasts for the year from 40 billion yen (£223.3 million) to 20 billion yen (£111.6 million).

Software celebrated more clear success with Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire selling 9.35 million units worldwide, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS hitting 6.19 million units. Meanwhile Mario Kart 8 saw 4.77 million sales meaning that over half of Wii U’s install base has picked it up, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sits at a similarly strong 3.39 million units.
