Revealed by Nintendo’s global president Satoru Iwata earlier this year as the ambiguously titled “Nintendo Figurine Platform,” this has now been named ‘amiibo.’

Nintendo will “create amiibo for a variety of Nintendo characters, games and series starting later this year.” All players will need to do is place the interactive figure on the Wii U GamePad.

Nintendo’s reveal largely centred on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, where such characters will be beamed in to battle. You can either square off against them, be pitted against other figures, team up with you, or challenge your friends. Every time they battle they will become stronger, with players able to can customise their amiibo’s special moves, improve their statistics and expand their tactical abilities. Amiibo vs. amiibo is the best way for them to level up, rather than CPU.

Games that will use these interactive figures will also include Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more details shared down the line.
