The Wii U has begun the year fairly poorly across North America, achieving hardware sales of an approximate 57,000 units.

Whilst NPD Group sales data no longer reveal specific figures, a representative commented that the sales figures were 38 per cent lower than those of the Wii at the same point in its life cycle.

Cue Gamasutra attempting to peg an approximate figure, estimating that they were between 45,000 to 55,000 units.

NeoGAF calculated the figure as 55,000, with Kevin Dent stating that they were close.

Nintendo confirmed during their financial briefing last month that the Wii U install base had reached 3.06 million by the end of December 2012.
