Intelligent Systems have a great track record in creating engaging portable experiences, ranging from Advance Wars, Fire Emblem and WarioWare: Twisted! Their first game for the Nintendo 3DS is the perfect pick up and play, portable game.

Pullblox – or Pushmo for those in America – is a puzzle-platformer that arrived on the Nintendo eShop last week for a mere £5.40. The game’s premise is simple. Children have found themselves trapped inside blocks.

The aim of the game is to pull or push these blocks to create platforms for you to jump up and rescue the child. Pretty straightforward, right? No, the game starts out by giving you a nice easy ride whilst teaching you the basics but soon ramps up the complexity of each stage.

The game lives in three dimensions, causing you to pull and push the blocks on the X and Y axis. This will cause a serious amount of head scratching as you try and work out the best moves to create your platforming path to the top.

Pullblox never rushes the player, you are not on a time limit, so you can sit back, relax and think through how best to solve the puzzle in front of you. If you mess up, you can simply reset the blocks and try again with no penalty.

In addition to the game’s 200 levels, users can create their own levels, once these are created it will be presented as a QR code you can share with others (there are a number of websites online that have already created hundreds of additional levels).

Intelligent Systems have absolutely nailed everything a great portable title needs to be. It’s simple in a non-intimidating way, addictive, challenging, rewarding and relatively cheap when you consider that you get potentially a never-ending amount of content.

To say Pullblox is one of the best Nintendo 3DS games of the year is an understatement, it’s quite possibly one of the best games of 2011 period. Absolutely essential gaming for anyone with a 3DS.
