DotEmu has announced that Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is in development for Nintendo Switch.

This is a modern version of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap, which was first released on the SEGA Master System way back in 1989. It is being developed in close collaboration between Lizardcube, DotEmu, and series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa, taking inspiration from Westone Bit Entertainment’s original creation.

When the Meka-Dragon curses a lonesome adventurer into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity, the mutated anti-hero must explore Monster Land in his search for a cure. His hopeful body can transform into a Lizard, Mouse, Piranha, Lion and Hawk, with the shape-shifting hero’s different forms being key to succeeding in your quest.

“A reunion was held in Mushroom Kingdom under a veil of absolute secrecy, where Nintendo suggested we could bring the game over to their upcoming platform,” DotEmu shared on their blog.

“Needless to say, it was a unique opportunity and as soon as we saw the system we knew we wanted to get the game on it. We started working on it and well, HERE WE ARE!

“The game plays fantastic on the Nintendo Switch! It runs at a smooth 60 FPS, the screen and colours in handheld mode are amazing, and it plays just as well in full HD when docked. We can’t wait to show you more!”

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will release on Nintendo Switch in 2017.
