Nana and Popo were met with the proverbial trapdoor after it emerged that they wouldn’t make a return appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Having mercilessly thumped their opponents in Melee and Brawl, the decision had been made that the Ice Climber stars wouldn’t rejoin the roster. For those wanting to know why, Weekly Famitsu’s recent interview with game director Masahiro Sakurai has shared their reasons.

The problems they encountered were twofold, in that, with the characters always appearing as a duo, it proved a struggle for the Nintendo 3DS to handle a fifth on-screen character. While they had been playable in an early Wii U build, work was abandoned on their inclusion when it was decided that both console and handheld versions would share the same character roster.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS will launch across Europe and North America on October 3rd, with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U releasing later this year.
