In celebration of the anticipated release of Donkey Kong Country Returns, Nintendo of Europe have today announced a rather unique way in which fans of the series can bag themselves a free copy of the title on launch day… by paying for it with bananas.

The company has teamed up with leading UK games specialist retailers GAME and Gamestation to award a free copy to the first 20 fans who present a bunch of bananas to staff at participating stores.

Those included are as follows:
* GAME: Oxford Street, London
* GAME: Merry Hill, Dudley
* GameStation: Prospect Centre, Hull

The two GAME stores are due to open from 9am, with the GameStation store due to open an hour earlier at 8am.

“Donkey Kong is as crazy about bananas as ever in this new take on a classic game,” said Neil Ashurst, spokesperson for GAME. “They’re a kind of currency, so why not let Donkey Kong’s biggest fans use them to buy the game? Donkey Kong Country Returns is great fun, so we want to see imagination on Friday morning. Fancy dress, bananas aplenty – anything goes.”
