Nintendo are to soon launch the first series in their Animal Crossing amiibo cards in the west, but Activision are also looking to turn their own toys-to-life success into card form with Skylanders Battlecast.

This free-to-play mobile card battle game will see players cast on another adventure in the Skylanders universe, with a single-player campaign and online PvP.

Portal Masters can create a team of their favourite heroes in building the ultimate deck for battle, with physical card packs at retail and digital card packs sold in-game to be available. When scanned the Skylander will magically come to life, with scanning two character cards resulting in an animate duel that players can interact with.

“Built from the ground up to bring Skylanders to life on mobile devices, Skylanders Battlecast combines physical card play with mobile gaming in an all-new way,” explains Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. “This is our biggest investment, and one of our most magical ideas yet, for the Skylanders franchise on mobile.”

Josh Taub, Activision Publishing’s senior vice president of product management, adds: “We are bringing physical cards to life in an exciting new way. Activision has assembled a team of experts across video game design, physical card game design, pro card players and top card artists to develop an amazing new experience.

“With Skylanders Battlecast, fans can expect the amazing creativity, innovation and fun that Skylanders games are known for delivering.”

Skylanders Battlecast will release through the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore in 2016.
