Nintendo held a presentation at their Nindies@Night event, during which they revealed that a Shovel Knight amiibo will be carving a path to retail.

Leaked ahead of schedule by specialist retailer GAME, it sees Shovel Knight become the first indie game to include amiibo support.

Exclusive to the Wii U version, the Shovel Knight amiibo can be scanned to allow a second player to help take on Shovel Knight’s quest cooperatively. Whereas on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, players can level up and customise Shovel Knight with new visual enhancements, relics and abilities which can then be used in exclusive amiibo challenge levels. The amiibo is also promised to be supported in future Shovel Knight games.

“Not only do we have a robust slate of indie games launching in the Nintendo eShop, but these games also contain features that can only be found on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS,” comments Damon Baker, Nintendo of America’s senior marketing manager of publisher and developer relations. “Creating an amiibo that’s compatible with all current and future Shovel Knight games shows that our strong relationship with independent developers is constantly evolving.”

“It’s been a great honour to work directly with Nintendo, creating a Shovel Knight amiibo that sits beside their most beloved characters,” adds Yacht Club Games. “We are elated to expand the world of Shovel Knight, and to keep developing unique game-play experiences on Nintendo’s platforms.”

Shovel Knight is now available for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS through the Nintendo eShop, with free DLC Plague of Shadows now scheduled for a September launch.
