Whilst Nintendo this week announced that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y had seen worldwide sales of four million copies on launch weekend, we now learn how successful it was in Japan alone.

According to sales figures provided by Media Create, the two 3DS exclusives achieved combined sales of 1,866,570 units in the country, easily topping the software chart and eclipsing Grand Theft Auto V in second place which shifted 360,115 copies on PlayStation 3.

3DS hardware sales themselves were also boosted seeing 213,570 units purchased in total, which divides further to 141,245 3DS XL and 72,325 standard models. Sony can celebrate shifting 60,166 PS Vitas, such a climb being attributed to the newly launched PS Vita 2000, although sadly the Wii U still continues to struggle with only 3,276 sales made.
