Nintendo has shared an update on the Nintendo Switch Online service, revealing price plans and that playing co-op and competitive games online will now remain free until 2018.

The service can be subscribed to for three membership durations: one-month at $3.99 (€3.99), three-months at $7.99 (€7.99) or 12-months at $19.99 (€19.99).

Those that subscribe will be able to use a dedicated smart device app that connects to Nintendo Switch, that will let you invite friends to play online, set appointments and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games.

But, the most significant change comes in the Classic Game Selection. Nintendo had previously looked to provide subscribers with a classic title each month with added online play, but these would become unavailable once the month ended. After widespread criticism, that plan has now changed.

Subscribers will now have continuous access to “a compilation of classic titles with added online play,” with Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario provided as examples.

Those that choose not to subscribe will still have access to Nintendo Switch system updates, software updates, the Nintendo eShop, register and manage friends, sharing screenshots on social networks, and to use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
