Miyamoto keen on spiritual successor to Zelda: A Link to the Past

Shigeru Miyamoto has expressed his desire to make a new The Legend of Zelda title that is “based on, or starting from” A Link to The Past, which originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

We’ve known that he has been toying with the idea since Eiji Aonuma revealed in November that Miyamoto had been “going back to the 2D Zelda games, in particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds”.

During an interview with EDGE this week, Miyamoto elaborated on this.

“I think the answer would be the same if we’re talking about just porting, but I think I’d be even more interested in creating something new maybe based on, or starting from, A Link To The Past. I think it’s important to bring some really new software.”

If Nintendo were to pursue the idea, Miyamoto believes he wouldn’t be the one to head up the project – something he feels could see his vision compromised.

“To be very honest and open, it really depends on the directors that have time at the moment as well,” he explained. “Some directors, I can give them the title and I know they will do something great with it.

“Other directors I’m not so 100 per cent confident [in], so they’re the ones I’d rather take a more remake approach to the title. It really depends on that as well”.

Whilst Miyamoto wouldn’t divulge which director at Nintendo is mostly catching his eye, he praised Koichi Kawamoto who developed the concept demo that birthed the WarioWare series, and created StreetPass Quest for the Nintendo 3DS. Miyamoto stated that Kawamoto is “a very strong figure [who] will play a very important role in the future”.
