Metroid: Samus Returns has been announced as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, coming soon after news that Metroid Prime 4 was in development for Nintendo Switch.

The action-packed, side-scrolling shooter has been developed by MercurySteam, who many will know for their work on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate.

It is “a modern reimagining” of 1992 Game Boy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus, with a concerted effort to include engaging and immersive 3D visuals as well as a rich, atmospheric colour palette.

Intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran’s arsenal has been enhanced with new moves and abilities – the powerful Melee Counter, 360-degree Free Aim Mode, and mysterious Aeion Abilities, as examples shown.

Metroid: Samus Returns will release exclusively for Nintendo 3DS on September 15th.
