Nintendo of America has announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has become “the fastest-selling game in the long-running Mario Kart series.”

The Nintendo Switch exclusive was met with more than 459,000 combined packaged and digital sales in the United States on launch day alone, breaking the previous first-day sales record which had been held by Mario Kart Wii – which sold 433,900 copies on launch day in 2008.

That represents a 45 percent attach rate, with nearly one in two console owners purchasing the kart racer at launch.

Nintendo notes that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has received more perfect review scores than any other Mario Kart game ever, with a 93 Metascore on Metacritic – meaning that it is the highest-rated game in the series for 15 years, and is tied for first place with Mario Kart: Super Circuit on Game Boy Advance.

Now looking to maintain a strong momentum behind Nintendo Switch, the coming months will welcome Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, ARMS and Splatoon 2.
