Nintendo’s global president Satoru Iwata has stated that the Wii U is “selling steadily,” admitting that the console has been unable to match the success of its predecessor.

“At the end of the Christmas season, it wasn’t as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom,” Iwata explained to Reuters during an interview. “But sales are not bad, and I feel it’s selling steadily.”

He also discussed the challenges of pitching two separate console versions, in the form of the Wii U Basic and Premium Packs.

“It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time, and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this,” Iwata explains. “Specifically, inventory levels for the [Deluxe] package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn’t find it.”

Whilst he didn’t provide an exact figure of the current install base, 638,339 Wii U systems were sold in Japan between December 8th – 30th, whilst 400,000 units were sold across North America during November.

That in itself means that global sales have surpasses one million units, with Nintendo aiming to achieve 5.5 million sales by the end of the fiscal year in March.
