Critical praise for Super Mario 3D World continues, with GameTrailers naming the Wii U exclusive as their Game of the Year across Nintendo platforms.

It beat out competition from LEGO City Undercover, Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 to clinch the title.

“Last out of the gate and going toe-to-toe with two major new consoles, Mario showed us all the true meaning of super,” the site explains in their discussion. “Despite our initial concerns Super Mario 3D World proved to be another hallmark platformer, showcasing ingenious new mechanics courtesy of original power-ups like the Cat Suit and Double-Cherry. Challenging post-game content is also a welcome addition in an age dominated by DLC and micro-transactions.”

They continue, “It may have been the Year of Luigi but Mario takes home top honours on the Wii U. True, there isn’t a lot in the way of exclusives this year, but sometimes one quality game can make all the difference. Super Mario 3D World is easily one of the best experiences on any platform this year, with its amazing acrobatic platforming, challenging levels and clever power-ups.

“It’s a solid finish to a difficult year for the Wii U. If Nintendo can get more heavy hitters like this one on the roster, maybe things might finally turn around for the console in 2014.”

  1. Game of the Year for the Wii U, definitely. Game of the Year across all Nintendo platforms, I’m not so sure… Super Mario 3D World is an excellent game that I’ve greatly enjoyed but I think there are some 3DS titles that give it strong competition. For one, I’ve heard that A Link Across Worlds was excellent though I haven’t gotten to play it yet.
