After transporting us back in time with Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, Square Enix’s next retelling is a tale woven around a jester, Dhoulmagus, who steals the King’s sceptre from Castle Trodain.

Now wielding its power, Dhoulmagus uses the sceptre to turn the King into a troll, the Princess into a horse, and the castle inhabitants into plants. Only a lone castle guard escapes the curse, who is now burdened with saving the kingdom that he has sworn to protect.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will see you travel the lands recruiting allies to your cause, following in the destructive trail that Dhoulmagus leaves behind. The Hero must retrieve the sceptre to ever have a chance at restoring Trodain back to its former glory.

This retelling boasts full voice-acting in plot-important cutscenes, new story content that will delve into The Hero and the villainous Dhoulmagus’ back story, additional quests, and a new alternative ending.

Adapted to portable play, a Quick-Save function will let adventurers save and exit the game at any time, while the Speed Up feature can let you blitz through encounters far more quickly.

Players can also pause the game outside of battles and cut-scenes to take photos that can be customised by making your party strike special poses, adding stickers, filters, or framing the image. Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect will later give you Cameron’s Codex, which will reward you for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters, and situations.

All images can be saved to the SD card and shared to other Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King players over StreetPass. Once received, players can give your images a thumbs-up which can increase the chances of you being awarded a new item.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will release exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in Europe and North America on 20th January 2017.
