The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma had teased that Link’s loyal steed was in his new open-air adventure, but it remained unclear how to get Epona in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Those worried that it would require an elaborate method to unlock her will be surprised to learn that it will simply require one amiibo. The Link amiibo (No. 5: Super Smash Bros. Collection), to be more specific.

Once scanned using the amiibo Rune on the Sheikah Slate, Epona will appear at whichever location you have designated.

Epona does not need to be tamed once mounted, but you should head to a nearby Stable to register her. You cannot rename her as the stablemasters will exclaim that you cannot rename a horse of legend.

Epona has a four-star rating across Strength, Speed and Stamina criteria, a general Temperament and a Max Bond with Link, and, once registered, will receive a unique bridle and saddle.

If Epona meets an untimely fate, the Link amiibo only works once to summon her. Players will instead have to head to the Malanya Spring in the Lake Tower region where, after paying 1,000 Rupees, Malanya the horse fairy appears and will offer to revive any horses that you have lost.
