Nintendo Switch Was In Development For Three Years

It was late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata that revealed Nintendo Switch as a “new hardware system with a brand-new concept” in March 2015, then referred to as a project with the codename NX.

Now, Nintendo director Shinya Takahashi has revealed that their work on the home gaming system had started three years ago and proved to be quite a challenge for them to produce a concept to move forward with.

“We have walked many roads and really struggled before coming up with the concept,” Takahashi explained to The Wall Street Journal.

With Microsoft and Sony continuing to pursue an ever-increasing technical performance with Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Nintendo looked to differentiate themselves once more by looking at their past.

“We looked back at what Nintendo has done, and when you think about it, it’s really been an amusement provider,” Nintendo Switch general development producer Yoshiaki Koizumi added, indicating how the console’s concept of playing home console games anywhere with anyone came to be.

“When the concept was set, most of the Switch’s basics came together quickly. Things like, you have to be able to take the controller outside, and you’ll need two of them.”

Nintendo Switch will launch worldwide on Friday 3rd March, priced at £279.99 ($299.99).
