Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night creator Koji “Iga” Igarashi has announced that the Kickstarter-backed project’s release has been delayed into 2018.

The gothic, exploration-focused action platformer was supported by 64,867 backers that pledged $5,545,991 toward the project. Having initially targeted a March 2017 release, the news hasn’t come as a particular surprise to backers who have wished the team well in response.

Igarashi has explained that they are hiring a new development team to assist the main production, but a larger question looms around the fact that the project is still destined for Wii U. With Nintendo NX scheduled to launch in March 2017, that could see Bloodstained remembered as the last physical and digital release for the console’s predecessor.

“Things have been progressing with development for Bloodstained, but between our current production set-up and release deadline, I’ve realised that at this rate the game may not end up meeting my quality standards,” Igarashi shared in a development update.

“I’ve decided to add a new development team to the main production and improve our approach so that we can keep the game fully on track for how I envision it. We’re in the process of securing these new developers. We will share more information with all of you soon.

“While the release date is not yet set in stone, we’re aiming for the first half of 2018. I apologise for the wait. However, I’d like to emphasise that I made this decision to absolutely guarantee the game is done right the first time.

“I hope you’ll continue to support us as wonderfully as you have been.”

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will release on Wii U in 2018.
