AMD has held their Q1 2016 earnings call, once again providing an indication that Nintendo NX’s release could be lying in wait just around the corner.
The multinational semiconductor company revealed “three design wins” that they have secured within their console-focused Semi-Custom business, which has been responsible for components used in Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.
Those wins will see the new products expected to secure $1.5 billion lifetime revenue over the next three-to-four years, which will start ramping in the second half of the current calendar year.
“In addition [to the new design wins] we have our current game console business as well,” AMD CEO Lisa T. Su explained to investors. “So when you look at the aggregate of that, we do expect to start ramping that new business in the second half of the year. But we also expect the seasonal uplift of our traditional game console business. So that’s adding to what we expect will be a strong year for Semi-Custom overall.”
She shared that “not all of the designs” will ramp up in 2016, meaning that at least one product will be used in a console that won’t start manufacturing until next year.
Su wouldn’t be drawn on specifics, however, replying to an investor: “I don’t believe that we’ve gone through any detail about what those wins are. So I would prefer to let that come out as our customers are ready to launch.”
