Nintendo of Europe has announced that Splatoon has sold through more than one million copies across the region, seeing the Wii U exclusive’s worldwide sales surpass 3.5 million.

Their fresh take on the online shooter genre has earned critical acclaim, named Best Shooter at The Game Awards 2015, Best Game at last year’s British Academy Children’s Awards, and securing more nominations in Game of the Year lists.

The company has remained committed to supporting Splatoon post-launch, the game’s “stay fresh” catchphrases now being attributed to the slew of new weapons, multiplayer maps, game modes and tweaks that have been made to the Wii U exclusive over the past year.

These content updates will continue with a new software update today, and new existing weapon combinations boxed as Sheldon’s Picks that will arrive in April.

To help welcome newcomers, Nintendo has releases a series of Splatoon – Top Tips! videos that cover basic skills necessary for victory in Turf War matches, presented by the game’s co-director Tsubasa Sakaguchi.

“Reaching one million sales for Splatoon in Europe is testament to the universal appeal of this brand new kind of shooter, which everyone can play and enjoy,” comments Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata.

“With varied titles like Splatoon, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, and Super Mario Maker already available, and titles including Pokkén Tournament, Paper Mario: Color Splash and Star Fox Zero on the way, the diverse line-up of games exclusively available on Wii U is going from strength to strength.”
