Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 3D was purportedly leaked yesterday, although merely a day later the creator has felt forced to confess their crime – shattering everyone’s dreams in the process.

FawfulTheGreat64 made the admission on Mario Boards, accompanied by a video where they shared their surprise that it had gained so much traction.

Adobe’s Photoshop and Premiere were used to conjure up the fake footage, placed on YouTube and immediately transformed into GIF images that began circling like wildfire.

“I was pretty surprised to see this whole Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 3D leak going viral,” their confession begins. “Honestly I didn’t think it was that hype-worthy. Took me about five minutes in Photoshop to make the logo, and about thirty minutes in Premiere to put together the title sequence. So yeah, I made the leak.”

They continue, “I sincerely apologise to everyone whose dreams I’ve crushed today. I know how it feels to anticipate a remake of one of the best games ever. I want it to be real too. And I wanted to do something convincing for once. Something that isn’t passed off as a fake nearly instantly.

“You may not know, but I tried leaking fake info in the past. Starting with a fake Mario Kart 8 leak of Antasma. It was proven fake pretty quick and never got much attention. Since then I’ve wanted to make a convincing leak just to see if I could achieve it. And I sorta did with this one. But I feel guilty at the same time, because while I’ve never been crushed by a major leak, I know many people have and for that I want to apologise.

“I bet there’s people watching this video and thinking ‘This guy should close his account.’ I don’t blame you. I especially want to apologise to my friends on Mario Boards and GameFAQs. A few of you guys seemed really excited about this game and it made me feel really bad knowing that it was never going to come out.”
