Nintendo NX’s concept will look to “surprise players”

Nintendo surprised the world when they announced their partnership with DeNA to pursue their mobile strategy last week, although president Satoru Iwata was keen to reiterate the company’s commitment to dedicated gaming hardware.

That came in a brief discussion about their “new hardware system with a brand-new concept,” currently attributed to the development codename NX.

“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’,” Iwata had shared. “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”

That hasn’t stopped the media trying to draw any more information from Iwata in interviews following the conference, although he has only suggested that Nintendo will look to “surprise players” as they have always done.

“However, if you only expand upon existing hardware, it’s dull,” Iwata discussed with Nikkei (via Kotaku). “In some shape or form, we’re always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.”

What we do know is that NX will support a new membership service developed by Nintendo and DeNA, which will replace Club Nintendo once it goes out of action later this year.

“Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service,” Iwata explained last week.

“Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.”

  1. Can I just say that most probably aren’t thinking the right way when reading up on this awesome news.

They say they have a gaming platform in production under the codename NX, but as well as that may be true, people are missing one little detail.

Iwata says he wants to span a network of players across each system no matter which one they’re playing.

I read somewhere (I think Engadget) that the NX software (OS) was even compared to android OS and iOS.

    Plus, smartphone games? Whaa?
No really, they just partnered with DeNA, who specializes in???… Mobile software/games!

With this much information, I think its safe to infer that Nintendo might have a smart device in production along with a platform and (don’t forget the and) a dedicated OS spanned across all Nintendo products: Connecting all consumers who use Nintendo with each other and the company.
