Hideo Kojima’s talents in directing, storytelling and cinematography in games have once again been recognised, having proudly become the recipient of Bradford Animation Festival’s inaugural Bradford UNESCO City of Film Award for Cinematography in Videogames.

The Japanese director had early aspirations to work in the film industry, although such ambitions were swayed when Shigeru Miyamoto’s Super Mario Bros. inspired him to join the fledgling games industry.

Kojima’s enthusiasm for film revolutionised the gaming industry’s approach to storytelling, after he broke boundaries with 1998’s Metal Gear Solid and later in Zone of the Enders.

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved movies,” Kojima shared in his acceptance video. “I feel like 70 percent of my body is made of movies. Therefore I am delighted to receive this award for cinematography.”

He continued, “Although I now make games, there was a time when I dreamed of being a film director. I grew up under the influence of movies, and I am proud to accept an award associated with film.”

Bradford UNESCO City of Film director David Wilson will make the award at a screening at the Bradford Animation Festival on Thursday evening, adding: “With the ever-advancing technology there are clear synergies between film techniques and gaming, and Metal Gear Solid was one of the pioneers in this area in my view.

“Bradford has a long history in pioneering film technology dating back to the dawn of cinema and we are currently looking at emerging technologies within the sector which can enhance the art of story telling through film, animation and gaming.”

Bradford Animation Festival runs between 17th – 22nd November 2014, looking to showcase and bring together talent in animation, film, special effects and videogames to Bradford’s National Media Museum. Guests this year include Ubisoft Montreal animation director Colin Graham, and Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil MBE.
