Eiji Aonuma may be throwing conventions surrounding The Legend of Zelda series straight out of the window, but it appears that certain ideas were also explored in Koei Tecmo’s spin-off Hyrule Warriors.

The most noteworthy of which being the introduction of a female Link, the Hero of Hyrule who is reborn whenever the kingdom is threatened by malevolent darkness. So far the character has remained male throughout the entirety of the series, although there was doubt cast on Link’s gender in the E3 2014 reveal trailer for The Legend of Zelda on Wii U. Concepts shared by Koei Tecmo in a supporting art book show that they had tried to create various models for a female counterpart to the legendary hero, which you can catch below.

Hyrule Warriors will release exclusively for Wii U across Europe on September 19th, and North America on September 26th.
