Nintendo have announced that they will terminate the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, bringing an end to certain online services across Wii, DSi and DS systems.

The company will flick the shutdown switch on 20th May 2014, the service having supported the Nintendo DS and Wii since November 2005, and being succeeded by the Nintendo Network currently in place for Wii U and 3DS.

“As of May 20th, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service will be discontinued and it will no longer be possible to use online features of Nintendo DS/DSi and Wii software such as online play, matchmaking and leaderboards,” Nintendo shared through their official website.

This was accompanied by a detailed list specifying affected first-party Wii, WiiWare, DS/DSi, and DSiWare games, with support for Wii Channels such as Kirby TV, Mario Kart, and Wii Speak also discontinuing.

It isn’t all bad news, however, with certain services continuing to be available beyond the termination date, including: Amazon Instant Video, Internet Channel, Netflix, Nintendo DS Browser, Nintendo DSiBrowser, Nintendo DSi Shop, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play, Wii Shop Channel, and YouTube.
