Activision have announced during their quarterly earnings call that their billion dollar franchise, Call of Duty, will now adopt a three-year development cycle.

This sees the established, annual series shift from its previous two-year cycle, in which the publisher alternated between Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Activision have now introduced Sledgehammer Games to the equation, granting each separate studio three years to develop their own Call of Duty titles before they see release.

This is a move that the publisher hopes will give “more time to polish,” and one that we hope will allow for more innovation than a school of fish that reacts to the player’s movement – one of Infinity Ward’s widely criticised boasts about Call of Duty: Ghosts.

The publisher also confirmed that Sledgehammer Games will be the lead developer behind this year’s entry, after Treyarch and Infinity Ward’s efforts with Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Ghosts in the past two years.
