News has just broken that Criterion Games co-founders Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry have left the studio.

Ward had most recently served as vice president and creative director with Sperry as studio director, both having now departed “to start afresh and form a new games company.”

“Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry have decided to leave EA,” a company spokesperson confirmed to Polygon. “We appreciate their many contributions through the years and wish them well in their future endeavours.

“The incredibly creative and talented team at Criterion are hard at work on a new project for next-gen consoles as new IP continues to be a major priority across EA. Matt Webster is leading development of the new game and the Criterion studio moving forward. Matt has been part of Criterion for years and has an exciting vision for this new game.”

Criterion Games delivered Need for Speed: Most Wanted U to Wii U earlier this year, which we showered with praise: “…if there’s one thing sung loud and clear by Criterion, it’s that this isn’t a half-hearted port simply delivered to expand upon the Wii U software library for the sake of it. It’s an engaging experience that successfully builds upon the foundations laid for its console counterparts.”
