Aonuma: Nintendo open to Twilight Princess / Skyward Sword HD remakes

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD began life as a tech demo, according to series producer Eiji Aonuma. Whilst Nintendo put resources behind the project to turn it into a fully-fledged title, they also experimented with two other existing games to influence the graphic approach for the new Zelda Wii U.

“When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we’re actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen,” Aonuma explained to Polygon.

“In doing so we realised that The Wind Waker’s graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life.”

It was Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword that they had also experimented with, and whilst they decided to pursue remaking The Wind Waker that doesn’t necessarily mean that either of the other two could get remade.

“I can’t say that the possibility is zero that those will be made into HD, but right now I need to work on the next installation in the series so I don’t have the bandwidth to do that right now,” Aonuma clarified. “But maybe it will happen if someone else does it.”
