Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale Review

With a modest runtime of three hours, Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale isn’t exactly vying for your fleeting downtime this summer.

Though hardly in the leagues of value offered by the likes of a dreamy Italian plumber and a village filled with anthropomorphic townsfolk, this LEVEL-5-flavored slice of the popular Guild02 collection riffs on childhood whimsy in a concise but mundane format.

Based on the bizarre premise that giant monsters and superheroes battle in a 1970’s Tokyo suburb each Friday, new kid on the block Sohta’s initial task of delivering some dry cleaning unfurls into a much greater chore.

Players will spend their time dashing around the beautiful unspoiled landscapes and alleys of Fuji No Hana, chasing down leads with the town’s locals to solve these strange weekly occurrences, and wasting spare moments besting your classmates in a game of Monster Cards.

Though its wonderful presentation channels its Japanese anime inspirations, Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale casts asides challenge or complexity for something that plays more like an interactive novel.

Clues aren’t just way pointed but clearly numbered on your map, Monster Cards is little more than a variant on Rock, Paper, Scissors, and the story carries on regardless of whether you’ve been paying attention.

Yet it’s hard not to find Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale story strangely captivating. Viewing this small but skin-deep world through the eyes of a youngster is as striking as it is disarming when imagination is peeled away for some sobering truths and heartfelt lessons.

In spite of its questionable price tag, Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale leaves an impression that’s likely to stick in your memory for longer than its total playtime.
