Way back in 1983, Nintendo created a rivalry that few would have believed could last over 30 years. Here we are in 2013, and portly Italian plumber Mario and jungle king Donkey Kong are still not the best of mates.
Within this latest Nintendo 3DS exclusive Donkey Kong joins Pauline to run a game arcade within the Mini-Land carnival, for which players must guide small wind-up robots called Minis – guised as Mario, Toad, Peach, Donkey Kong – across a tile-based puzzle adventure. If you think of it as a Mario-skinned “Pipe Mania,” you’ll most likely understand the idea.
You’ll keep your gaze firmly fixed on the touch screen, whilst the 3D action blares away on the main screen. In all honesty, I rarely looked at the top screen during the main game as taking your eyes away from the puzzles can result in silly mistakes, players needing to move tiles around swiftly to quide your Minis to safety.
Yet the game isn’t all about such tile puzzles, with there being a number of mini-games to open up. Target Smash sees you fling Minis into the air at on-screen targets, whilst Elevation Station tasks you with turning a crank to raise or lower your Minis to collect coins and avoid approaching enemies.
Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move is absolutely packed with content. Whilst the asking price might seem high at first, once you see just how much game is on offer you’ll think it was a steal.
