The Internet was abuzz with speculation after Nintendo’s global president Satoru Iwata revealed that the company would be launching a free-to-play game within the fiscal year.
It wouldn’t utilise the strength of either their Mario or Pokémon brands, we were told, but we certainly weren’t expecting what Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed today.
Nintendo’s side-scrolling submersible 3DS title Steel Diver is preparing to emerge from the depths once more, with a four-player battle mode in tow.
“There is something we’re doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game… It’s going to be very fun,” Miyamoto explained to IGN.
“We’re exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint – it’s going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting.”
Nintendo are still to finalise their business model for their first stride into the free-to-play arena, with Miyamoto assuring that they don’t want the pricing to affect the entertainment value of the final product.
“It’s something that we’re hoping to be able to show relatively soon,” Miyamoto concluded, indicating that it will most likely make an appearance within a future Nintendo Direct.
