Nintendo found guilty of 3D patent infringement

Nintendo have been found liable of infringing on an inventor’s 3D display technology patent, and ordered to pay $30.2 million in compensatory damages.

The jury shared their verdict today, Nintendo having found themselves sued by Seijiro Tomita back in 2011 for breaching his pending technology patent that governed use of 3D imagery without the need for 3D glasses.

Nintendo argued that the Nintendo 3DS didn’t use key aspects of his patent, and that his pitch to the company was one of several in regards to the use of such technology. Yet, this didn’t prove enough to swing the verdict in their favour.

“We are thankful to the jurors for their diligence and hard work,” Tomita’s attorney Joe Diamante commented after the verdict. “It has been a honour to represent Mr. Tomita and to protect his invention.”

Nintendo have yet to comment on the verdict.
