Nintendo’s day one system update for the Wii U has now gone live, allowing owners to install functionality that includes social network service Miiverse, the Nintendo eShop, Wii U Chat and the Internet Browser.
To make use of the console’s online services, however, you’re required to set-up a Nintendo Network ID.
Users will have to accept a User Agreement, as well as providing information including their birthday, gender, state, time zone, username and password. You will then confirm your Nintendo Network ID through an email, sent to the email address that you specify.
The guidelines for usernames have now been confirmed for North America, revealing the limitations imposed on those wishing to set up an account:
– “The ID you choose will be visible to others using online services such as the friend list or Miiverse.”
– “Use between six and 16 characters. You can use numbers, letters, periods, dashes, and underscores.”
– “You cannot use punctuation as the first or last character or your ID. You also cannot use two or more punctuation characters in a row.”
Whatever you choose will be the username that will be visible to other players through both Miiverse and the Wii U’s online services, so select wisely!
These can also be allocated to specific Mii characters, with an option to request a password whenever you wish to access the account. Miis that are connected to a Nintendo Network ID will be displayed with a blue background.
The Wii U is now available across North America, and will launch in Europe on November 30th.
